How to Host A Website on Google Drive

This tutorial teach you how to host a website on Google Drive. Before going to host a demo page you all need to know what is Google drive. Google Drive is a Google product and is a cloud storage and synchronization service which is released on April 24, 2012. It enables user to edit their documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and more. Earlier Google drive has 5GB storage capacity. Google has increased it size upto 15GB, 3 times higher than earlier. Files shares publicly on Google drive can be searched on the web by search engines.

Hosting website on Google drive is an exciting feature added by Google. This helps developers who want to show a demo to their clients. Hosting website or web page on Google drive is completely free. No need to pay anything. Using Google drive anyone can host either their basic websites or complex JavaScript based on web apps. Anyone can publish any kind of contents like HTML pages, CSS, images files, audio and video files. You can look this demo site that I have published on Google drive.

Publishing a website on Google drive is very easy. First you need to create your webpages and put them in a folder and upload it on your Google drive. Remember, keep all your contents in a relative folders like image files under image folder, java script files under js folder and css files under styles folder. Otherwise you can kept all your files in a single folder instead of keeping them in separate folder. Now you need to upload this folder in your Google drive. You can upload this folder in two ways.

Click here to download my .zip file. Go to File and click Download. Once it is downloaded unzip this file upload into your Google drive. Follow the instructions.

Make your contents available for public from Google drive folder from My Documents

Process 1

If you have installed Google drive in your computer then just put that folder in Google drive located in My Documents. After putting your folder in Google drive folder in My Documents in your computer, Google drive is automatically synchronize your files and folders from Google drive folder.

Otherwise right click on the folder where your web contents are located then go to Google Drive and then click Share. Once you click Share you will be directed to login to your Google drive account. Insert your username and password and click Sign in. Share settings dialog box open.

Here you need to change the access settings from Private to Public. So that your website is available to public. To do so click Change against Private - Only the people listed below can access. Here you need to change the visibility option to Public on the web and then click Save. Now click Done.





Now click your website folder under My Drive and click index.html file. Here you will see the codings of your index.html file. After that click Open button located bottom of right side. Once your index.html page loaded click Preview button to see the live page. Thats it!



 



Process 2

Login to your Google drive account with the help of your username and password. Click upload button and select Folder.... Browse your folder and click OK. Wait for a while till your folder is uploaded. After that click My Drive and then select your folder and click share button. Share settings dialog box open.

Here you need to change the access settings from Private to Public. So that your website is available to public. To do so click Change against Private - Only the people listed below can access. Here you need to change the visibility option to Public on the web and then click Save. Now click Done. Rest of the steps are same.
