How To Send An Encrypted Email & Secure Your Message

E-mail is the most useful tool to exchange information with your friends, family or a stranger. More than 200 billion e-mails are sent worldwide everyday. Every e-mail user want their information to be sent confidentially and always want to make it confidential. Everybody's eye is open when America's whistleblower Edward Snowden's documents leaked how US surveillance program PRISM which operated by National Security Agency (NSA) collects stored internet communications based on demands made to internet companies such as Google Inc. under Section 702 of the FISA (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act) Amendments Act of 2008. It has brought eye to forehead of every internet user. That's mean there is no privacy on internet. Nothing is hidden. Everything is open.

Whistleblower Edward Snowden always communicate with his friends with encrypted email and thats why no one from NSA able to catch him. And from then almost every internet user around the world start searching how an e-mail is sent in an encrypted form.

Normally, what we send through e-mail that can easily be intercepted or hacked before reaching the recipient. Sending normal message through e-mail seems to be a postcard. Anybody who works at the post office can read the postcard since its not encrypted.

Thats why I am encouraging you to send your private & sensitive message in an encrypted form securely through your e-mail. Here, I am giving you some examples so that you can send your private & sensitive information securely through your e-mail.


Mailvelope is an Google chrome extension. It allows to encrypt and decrypt emails for the most popular webmail services following the OpenPGP standard. It integrates directly into the webmail user interface. It comes preconfigured for major webmail providers (Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo! and GMX). Mailvelop can also be configured to support other webmail providers. Lets follow the steps to configure Mailvelop for your e-mail.

Step 1. Since it is a chrome extension so you need to add it to your chrome. To Add Mailvelop to your chrome click here and then click the right image near Add to chrome and then click Gmail. You can follow the image to clear your confusion.

Step 2. Confirm New Extension window opens. Here you need to click Add. Mailvelop extension is added to your Google chrome.

Step 3. Now click Mailvelop extension icon located top of right side and select Reload.

Step 4. Again click Mailvelop extension icon and then click Options.

Step 5. After that you need to click Generate Key under KEY RING located left side. Here you need to fill the form by entering details of recipient. Type name, e-mail address and passpharase and then click Submit button. You can generate key for more number of recipients so that you never require to generate key again and again.

Step 6. You have done almost 90%. If you wish to see the details of key then click Display Keys and then click small triangle pointing towards right. See the image below.
If you do not see Mailvelop extension icon locate top of right side then click Customize and control Google Chrome button looks like horizontal bars located extremely top of right side and then click Settings.

Now click Extensions located left side. Now you will able to see all the extensions that you have added already to your Google Chrome. Here you need to click Options of Mailvelop extension and do the step 5 and step 6.


Step 7. Now login to your Gmail and click Compose or press C on the keyboard if you have enabled custom keyboard shortcuts. Once you click Compose you will see a Mailvelop box in your compose box. Type the e-mail recipient, subject and then type your message. After that click the Mailvelop icon in your compose box.

Step 8. Compose mail box opens. If you do not type your message in step 7, you can type here. Now you need to click lock icon. See the image below.

Step 9. You can select recipient from the drop-down list. Select your desired recipient and click Add and then click OK. See the image below.

Step 10. Once you click OK, your message is encrypted. Even you can't read your message. Now click Transfer. See the image below.

Step 11. Now click Send button to send your message. Your message is sent in encrypted form which is more secure than sending a normal message. Recipient need to decrypt your message to read it.

You will find many articles on internet regarding sending an encrypted e-mail. But you will never find step by step guide. i hope this article helps you very much. Mailvelop is just a single example. Once it is installed, you simply need to click the "Encrypt" button in your Gmail compose mail box to enable it. Then, you need to write a question to your recipient and send your message. After a little while your message is encrypted and a link is sent to your recipient.
