Google Webmaster Tools Complete Guide

In this post, I will show you how to use Google Webmaster Tools services, how to add website, sitemaps to  Google Webmaster Tools and how to analyze your website. Google webmaster tools is a very popular, free of cost and and highly recommended web service for webmasters like bloggers and website owners.

It allows webmasters to analyze the detailed web reports about website visibility on Google search engine. Google webmaster tools can check website's indexing status, crawl errors and optimize visibility, search queries, links to your website etc. Google Webmaster Tools also display traffics for each keyword separately and gives more precise information of a website about website performance according to search query. Services of Google Webmaster Tools

Webmasters can analyze their website under 5 different categories namely Site Dashboard, Search Appearance, Search Traffic, Google Index and Crawl. Google Webmaster Tools provides the below useful services for a website.

No 1. Site Dashboard

Site Dashboard is the summary of the Google webmaster tools. In this section, webmasters can get the current status of a website including Crawl Errors, Search Queries and Sitemaps. Read also : How to fix HTTP and HTTPS mixed content errors.

No 2. Search Appearance

Search Appearance has 4 options namely Structured Data, Data Highlighter, HTML Improvements and Sitelinks. 

Structured Data gives you the details report regarding top level structured data element with errors. Structured Data has 6 types of data types namely hatom, hentry, BlogPosting, Website, Blog and Person. If you get an error in the Structured Data then click on the data type to check the errors. Once you get the errors you can easily resolve it.

HTML Improvements gives a clear idea about meta description and title tag of a website. It also help you to detect duplicate meta contents posted on your site. Read also : How to setup AdSense matched content ad unit.

Sitelinks are automatically generated links that may appear under your site's search results. If a webmaster don't want a page to appear as a sitelink in the search results then webmaster can easily demote that page.

No 3. Search Traffic

In this sections, you can monitor the search traffic of your website under 5 different category namely Search Queries, Links to Your Site, Internal Links, Manual Actions and International Targeting.

Search Queries gives you the detailed report of top queries and top pages with impressions, number of clicks, CTR (click through rate) and average position of a page. Read also : How to make money online from home.

Links to your site gives you the number of links that your website has. In this section you can also check who links your site most and most linked content. Webmasters need to click on an article  to get more info.

Internal Links display the links that your website has. Webmasters need to click on an article  to get more info.

International Targeting option allows webmasters to target audiences based on geographic location and language. To target audience of preferred country, webmasters need to click Country tab and then need to select the preferred country from the list.

No 4. Google Index

In this section, webmasters can able to see the status of URL that are index to Google. Google Index has 3 different category namely Index Status, Content Keywords and Remove URLs.

Index Status will display the status of URL indexed to Google from the last year. Index status has 2 tabs namely Basic and Advanced. Under the Basic tab, webmasters can see the only data that are indexed and not blocked by Google robots and under the Advanced tab, webmasters can see the total indexed data against data that are blocked by Google robots. Content Keywords will display the top keywords associated with your website with its significance.

Remove URLs will display the URLs that are removed by Google robots.

No 5. Crawl

In this section webmasters will see the various crawl errors and crawl status that Google bots encountered while trying to crawl a website. Crawl has 6 different category namely Crawl Errors, Crawl State, Fetch as Google, robots.txt Tester, Sitemaps and URL Parameter. Crawl Errors will display site errors and URL errors. To see the detailed error report click on the URL links.

Crawl Status display the status of pages that are crawled per day by Googlebot.

robots.txt Tester is tool where you check which URL of your website is blocked by Googlebot. Webmasters can't see the blocked URLs here. Webmasters have to check manually by entering the URLs. Webmasters can also see the robots.txt file's commands such Allow and Disallow that tell crawlers software which URLs they can or cannot retrieve. If a URL is disallowed by robots.txt then that URL and it's contents will not appear in the Google search results. Sitemaps is the another most important section of Google Webmaster Tools. In this section webmasters can  submit their website's sitemap to Google search engine and monitor the indexing status of their website. Read also : How To Submit Blogger Sitemap To Search Engines

URL Parameter allow webmasters to configure URL parameters of their website if Googlebot experienced problems with coverage of your site. Read also : How to add Facebook comment plugin to blogger.

How To Start With Google Webmaster Tools


In order to use Google Webmaster Tools you must be the owner of a website and have full access to it as well as you must have a Google account. Visit the Google Webmaster Tools web page:

https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/

If you already have a Google account then use your existing user id and password to login to Google Webmaster Tools. Otherwise you need to create a Google account first.
